MSC Cruises and UNICEF Invite Guests To ‘Get on Board for Children’

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (August 7, 2009) – As a family-owned and family-oriented cruise line and the market leading cruise company in Brazil, MSC Cruises has chosen to demonstrate its commitment to the Brazilian community through an important alliance with UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Brazil is not only the biggest and most populous country in Latin America, but it is also one of the 11 most inequitable countries in the world, with alarming levels of poverty in the major metropolitan centers.

According to a 2009 report published by UNICEF, there are 680,000 children and adolescents who don’t attend school. Research by IPEA (National Institute of Applied Economic Research) reveals that almost 18 percent of adolescents between ages 15-17 do not attend school and 48 percent of children fail to complete a secondary education. In addition, children living in poverty are 21 times more likely than their peers to be illiterate.

Through the “MSC for UNICEF” initiative, MSC Cruises is supporting a UNICEF program to bring a brighter future to children in 126 vulnerable communities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo by helping provide them with equality of access to a quality education.

MSC Cruises is committed to raising awareness among guests on its cruise ships and will leave an informational brochure in every stateroom. Guests are also invited to “Get on Board for Children” while making a difference with a financial contribution. A donation of any amount can be added to a guests’ onboard bill.

The project is part of UNICEF’s “Education for all” program, dedicated to helping achieve universal education, one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals for 2015, endorsed by 192 member states and 23 international organizations.

The alliance was officially launched in Barcelona at the July 12 christening of MSC Cruises’ new flagship, MSC Splendida. Full details of the partnership, the program and how to help Brazil’s most vulnerable children build a better life can be found online at www.msc-unicef.com.

MSC Cruises is proud to be involved in this initiative, a demonstration of its commitment to help build a better world for present and future generations.

About MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is the fastest growing cruise line in the world with a fleet of nine ships: MSC Fantasia, MSC Poesia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Musica, MSC Sinfonia, MSC Armonia, MSC Opera, MSC Lirica, and MSC Melody. Two new ships launch soon; MSC Splendida (July of 2009) and MSC Magnifica (March of 2010). MSC Cruises is the only company in the world to receive the “6 Golden Pearls” award from the Bureau Veritas in recognition of its exceptional quality management and environmental protection.

MSC SPLENDIDA UTILIZES LATEST “GREEN” TECHNOLOGIES ONBOARD

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (June 29, 2009) – Reflecting the high personal standards and love of the sea of its owners, MSC Cruises has incorporated the latest and best systems for protecting the environment into the new MSC Splendida, which will be christened by godmother Sophia Loren on July 12. Like her sister ship MSC Fantasia, the MSC Splendida effectively utilizes “green” technology to ensure that she preserves the beauty of the sea and the air wherever she travels.

The many environmentally friendly features onboard include:

  • A five-stage Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) plant that processes all wastewater produced onboard. Although the effluent produced by this system is so pure that it could be discharged into the ocean without harming the ecosystem, it is stored onboard for later transfer to land-based waste systems in port.
  • Innovative Stateroom Monitoring System technology in the staterooms and public areas provides nearly a 25 percent reduction in onboard energy use. For example, this system is able to detect an opened stateroom window or balcony doors, adjusting the room temperature setting in the climate control system accordingly.
  • Special high-efficiency incinerators handle disposal of paper and cardboard waste onboard, while compacting machines and grinders sort and prepare aluminium and glass which is later recycled in port.

These environmental safeguards of MSC Splendida match those used on her sister ship, MSC Fantasia, which earned the distinction of being the first passenger ship to receive the prestigious ‘6 Golden Pearls’ award from Bureau Veritas in recognition as one of the greenest ships in the world. MSC Splendida is currently awaiting certification for this classification, which also includes meeting the highest standards for food quality and safety.

MSC Cruises cares about the environment and continues to take steps towards its improvement. The company was one of the first to sign the Venice Blue Flag agreement to reduce emissions in the Venice Lagoon through the use of ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel in its engines. For this year’s World Environment Day, on June 5, MSC Cruises offered free onboard screenings of the eco-documentary Home by photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, produced by Denis Carot, Luc Besson and François-Henri Pinault.

The countdown has started. On July 12, watch the christening of MSC Splendida live at www.mscwebtv.com.
